Eco-friendly coffee processing plants being built in Norway

Wednesday, 26 June 2019.

Joh. Johannson Coffee company’s new coffee plant in Deli forest at Vestby in Akershus, Norway will be one of the world's most advanced plants for the processing of coffee.

The plant will have a climate neutral operation and a low-emission process for coffee processing. Climate neutral operation is to be achieved through the choice of materials and climate actions. Climate neutral operation also implies that the plant will be producing as much or even more energy than that it requires for operational needs.  Coffee processing plant in Vestby is based on the use of new technology in a number of areas such as the use of cooling wells, low carbon solar PV cells, heat recovery and biogas. The uniqueness of the facility is that it is the first time one puts those elements together to create a sustainable coffee production plant.

The environmental factor has been crucial for John. Johannson Coffee. The facility be be supplied with energy from both biogas and from their own solar systems. 38 percent of the coffee is sold in Norway, produced nowadays in the coffee tower at Filipstad, Oslo. From 2020, however, shall all of this happen at the new facility in Carlsbad.

NORSK ENERGI’s role in the project
Norsk Energi has been included in several stages, from concept to the detail engineering, and now during the construction phase. We have prepared a concept for the energy plant ensuring the highest degree of waste heat use for heating and cooling. We have cooperated with the supplier of coffee burning machines in this work, for the best possible interaction between production and energy supply system.

Waste heat from the flue gases of the coffee roasting is recycled and saved in the accumulator tanks of the energy plant. From here, energy is supplied for the heating needs to both coffee production process and its building. Cooling from energy  containing boreholes shall go mainly to the cooling water in the coffee grinders. The heat in the cooling water can also be exploited in the heat pump, if necessary. Energy supply system  also has el-boiler and cooling machine filling the role of a peakload and backup.
